Recysclinic is an innovative Company aware of the multiple accidents resulting from sharps in Health Centres, and has patented several systems for their prevention.

At Recysclinic we wish to manage all kinds of sharps waste from Health Centres by:

The Recysclinic Sharps and Encapsulator devices are under the protection of the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office as safety tools for sharp objects, within the framework of the Industry sector dedicated to the manufacture of sanitary medical instruments.

CONTEXT

The use of sharp medical equipment for patient care involves:

The permanent risk of health personnel being exposed to and being involved in a work-related accident, which can lead to infections by pathogens especially when accidents occur involving sharps or punctures.
In 2010, 33,800 new HIV-related infections were reported, 1.7 million hepatitis B virus and 315,000 hepatitis C virus infections.
Currently 16,000 million annual injections are supplied.
Of the 35 million workers in Health Centres, 3 million have experienced sharps-related accidents.
30 sharps-related injuries occur per 100 beds per year according to EPINET (the highest used national surveillance system in the world)

EPIDEMIOLOGY

By analysing the epidemiology and characteristics of injuries we can highlight the most relevant data:

Types of injury: 81% are needlestick injuries.
By place of occurrence: 46% in clinical services, 42% in operating theatres, 5% in emergency box and 7% in others.
According to the circumstances of the accidents: most occur in 35-39% in direct care, 38-44% aftercare before use and waste, and 15-20% in eliminating sharps and other handling clothing and waste.
Most exposed groups: Nurses 45.7%, 15.2% Clinical Assistants – 13.9% and 11.2% -13.1% Medical.

ARGUMENTS

There are more than enough economic, prevention of work-related accidents and ethical arguments to adopt the use of medical safety devices, such as consumables and containers. In this aspect there is still a great deal of room for improvement:

Cost-effective: reduces the extremely high costs incurred from workplace accidents, therefore generating savings.
Waste generated by health practice. According to studies, it is estimated that between 2 and 3 kg of waste per hospital bed per day are generated. Subsequent treatment of this waste produces a significant environmental impact. By separating metallic and plastic material we can make progress in waste management in the promotion of recycling.
Different legislative measures have started to lead to Health Centres having medical safety devices to provide a safe work environment.
